Four times the contacts, no branding on your emails, and one cap that bites exactly when traffic arrives

If you are picking your first marketing platform and you do not want to pay yet, this comparison comes down to one number: Systeme.io’s free plan holds 2,000 contacts. GetResponse’s free plan holds 500.
Quick verdict
Short answer: For a beginner starting from zero, Systeme.io is the better free plan by a wide margin — four times the contacts, no branding on your emails, and you can actually sell a product without upgrading. GetResponse becomes the better choice once you are paying, because its automation, segmentation and webinar tools go deeper than anything Systeme.io offers. The honest summary: start free on Systeme.io, and only move to GetResponse if you hit a wall that specifically needs its advanced automation.

The free plans are not close, and here is why that matters
Most “best free email tool” lists treat 500 contacts and 2,000 contacts as roughly the same thing. They are not, and the difference shows up faster than beginners expect.
Five hundred subscribers sounds like a lot when you have twelve. But a lead magnet that converts at a normal rate on modest traffic can fill 500 slots within a few months. The moment you hit 501 contacts on GetResponse’s free plan, you cannot send. Not “you get a warning” — the send function locks until you upgrade or delete contacts.
On Systeme.io you have 2,000 contacts and unlimited email sends. GetResponse’s free tier caps you at 2,500 emails per month, which sounds generous until you do the arithmetic: 500 contacts × one weekly newsletter = 2,000 emails a month. One extra broadcast and you are at the ceiling.
The branding problem nobody mentions
GetResponse adds a GetResponse badge to every message sent from a free account. For a hobby list this is cosmetic. If you are trying to look like a real business to people who just handed over their email address, it is not nothing. Systeme.io’s free plan does not stamp your emails.
The landing page cap is the sharpest edge
This one catches people out. GetResponse free accounts are limited to 1,000 unique visits across all landing pages in the account, per month. Once you cross it, your landing pages go offline. If a post of yours does well and sends traffic, the page your traffic is landing on stops working — exactly at the moment it is finally working.
What Systeme.io’s free plan gives you that GetResponse’s does not
Systeme.io is not really an email tool with extras bolted on. It is an all-in-one platform where email is one module, and the free plan includes pieces GetResponse simply does not offer for free:
- 3 sales funnels (15 funnel steps in total) — opt-in pages, sales pages, thank-you pages
- 1 online course with unlimited students, and you can sell it
- 1 blog hosted on the platform
- 1 custom domain
- 0% transaction fees — Systeme.io does not take a cut of what you sell
- 1 affiliate program, so other people can promote your product for you
That last group is the real gap. On GetResponse’s free tier you are collecting email addresses. On Systeme.io’s free tier you can collect email addresses and sell something to them without paying a cent. For someone testing whether an idea has buyers, that difference decides how fast you find out.
Being fair to Systeme.io’s free plan: the limits are real
I earn a commission if you sign up to Systeme.io, so here is the part most affiliate posts leave out. The free plan is tight in ways that are easy to miss on the feature list:
- 1 automation rule
- 1 workflow
- 1 tag
- 1 email campaign
Read that again, because it is the single most important thing to understand before you start building. Delivering a lead magnet typically uses one automation rule and one tag. That is your entire allowance, spent on the first thing you build. You can still send unlimited broadcast newsletters — those are not campaigns in Systeme.io’s sense — but you cannot run a second automated sequence, and you cannot segment your list in any meaningful way with a single tag.
So the honest framing is this: Systeme.io free is excellent for getting your first funnel live and your first product sold. It is not a plan you run a segmented email business on. That is what the $17/month Startup plan is for.
Paid plans: what the money actually buys
| Systeme.io | GetResponse | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry paid plan | Startup — $17/month | Starter — $19/month (monthly billing) |
| Contacts at that price | 5,000 | 1,000 |
| Annual discount | Available | $15.59/month billed annually (18% off) |
| Next tier up | Webinar — $47/month (10,000 contacts) | Marketer / Creator tiers |
| Top tier | Unlimited — $97/month (unlimited contacts) | Enterprise (custom pricing) |
At roughly the same monthly cost, Systeme.io’s entry plan carries five times the contacts — 5,000 against 1,000 — and unlocks unlimited sales funnels plus 5 courses. GetResponse’s Starter plan at 1,000 contacts gives you unlimited email sends, autoresponders and its website builder.
GetResponse prices by contact tier (1k, 2.5k, 5k, 10k, 25k, 50k, 100k), so the number above is the entry rung, not a flat rate. As your list grows, your bill climbs with it. Systeme.io moves in bigger, flatter jumps. For a beginner, flatter is easier to plan around.
Where GetResponse genuinely wins
If this post only listed Systeme.io’s advantages it would not be much use to you. GetResponse is the stronger product in several areas, and if any of these describe your plan, it is the right pick:
- Advanced automation. GetResponse’s workflow builder handles branching logic, conditions and multi-path journeys that Systeme.io’s automation does not attempt. If you want “if they clicked X but not Y, wait 3 days, then send Z”, this is the tool.
- Segmentation depth. Systeme.io’s tagging is basic. GetResponse’s dynamic segmentation is a different class of feature.
- Webinars. Built in on the higher GetResponse tiers. Systeme.io offers automated webinars on its $47/month Webinar plan, but GetResponse’s implementation is more mature.
- Deliverability track record. GetResponse has been in the email business since 1998 and has the infrastructure and reputation that comes with it.
- Reporting. More granular analytics across the board.
The pattern is consistent: GetResponse is a deeper marketing suite; Systeme.io is a simpler all-in-one that lets a beginner ship something today.
Ease of use
Systeme.io is built for people who have never touched marketing software. Everything sits on one navigation bar, and going from sign-up to a live funnel is an afternoon’s work, not a weekend’s.
GetResponse is a fuller suite, and that power comes with more screens, more settings and more decisions before anything is live. Neither is hard. But if “I opened it and did not know where to click” is a way you have abandoned software before, that is a real factor.
Which should you choose?
Choose Systeme.io if…
- You are starting from zero and do not want to pay yet
- You want to sell a course, ebook or digital product, not just send newsletters
- You want funnels, email, a blog and checkout in one place instead of stitching tools together
- A flat, predictable bill matters more to you than advanced features
Choose GetResponse if…
- Complex automation is central to your plan, not a nice-to-have
- You need real segmentation from day one
- Webinars are part of how you sell
- You are ready to pay from the start and want room to grow into a serious suite
Frequently asked questions
Is Systeme.io’s free plan really free forever?
Yes. Systeme.io states the free plan never expires and does not require a credit card. It is a permanent tier, not a trial.
Does GetResponse have a permanent free plan?
Yes, but the path to it is confusing. You start with a 14-day trial of the premium features; when that ends, the account drops to a restricted free tier of 500 contacts and 2,500 emails per month, with the GetResponse badge on messages and landing pages capped at 1,000 visits. So you do not lose your account — you lose the features you spent two weeks learning.
What happens if I exceed the free contact limit?
On GetResponse, sending locks at 501 contacts. On Systeme.io you would need to upgrade past 2,000 contacts. Neither deletes your data.
Can I move my list later?
Yes. Both let you export contacts as CSV and import elsewhere. What does not transfer is your funnels, automations and pages — those are rebuilt by hand. This is the real switching cost, and it is why the tool you pick at 100 subscribers still matters at 5,000.
Which is better value overall?
For a beginner without a budget, Systeme.io — it is not close. For a marketer who needs automation depth and is paying either way, GetResponse earns its price.
The verdict
These tools are aimed at different people, and the free plans make that obvious. Systeme.io hands a beginner 2,000 contacts, unlimited sends, three funnels and the ability to sell a product, for nothing. GetResponse’s free tier is closer to a limited sample of a premium suite: 500 contacts, a badge on your emails, and a landing page cap that bites exactly when traffic arrives.
If you are reading this because you have not started yet, start on Systeme.io free. Build one funnel, deliver one lead magnet, get your first 100 subscribers. You will learn more from that than from another week of comparison posts — and if you outgrow it or hit the single-workflow wall, moving to a paid plan on either platform is a decision you will be far better equipped to make.
How I test, and why you can trust this
- I pay for what I can. I bought the Hostinger Premium plan myself and this site runs on it. I use a real Systeme.io account, and the screenshots here come from it.
- Every number is checked and dated. Prices and plan limits come from the official pricing page or help documentation, and I state the date I checked them. SaaS pricing changes — a dated figure is an honest one.
- I do not invent experience. Where I have not used a tool myself, I say so and review it on verified features and pricing only.
- I say when a competitor wins. If a tool I earn nothing from is the better choice for you, that is what the post says.
- Affiliate links never change your price. They are marked, and they cost you nothing extra.
