How Many Email Campaigns Can You Send on the Systeme.io Free Plan?

One campaign, unlimited newsletters — and why that difference decides whether the free plan fits you

Quick verdict

Short answer: one. The Systeme.io free plan allows 1 email campaign. But that number is misleading on its own, because a “campaign” in Systeme.io does not mean what most people assume — and newsletters you send to your list are unlimited and do not count against it.

So the accurate version is: unlimited broadcasts, one automated campaign. Which for a lot of beginners is fine, and for some is a wall in week two. This post explains which of those you are.

Limits checked on Systeme.io’s official free plan documentation on 21 July 2026.

Campaigns vs newsletters: the distinction that trips everyone up

Systeme.io splits sending into two different things, and they are counted differently.

What it is Free plan limit
Newsletter (broadcast) A one-off email you write and send to your list or a segment of it, now or scheduled Unlimited
Campaign A pre-built sequence of emails that goes out automatically over time after a trigger 1

This is why two people can give you opposite answers about the same plan. Someone who sends a weekly newsletter will tell you the free plan is unlimited — and they are right. Someone building an automated onboarding sequence will tell you it is capped at one — also right.

If your mental model of email marketing is “I write something each week and send it”, the free plan does not restrict you at all.

The full list of “1”s on the free plan

The campaign limit does not sit alone. Here is everything the free plan caps at one:

Item Free plan allowance
Email campaigns 1
Automation rules 1
Workflows 1
Tags 1
Custom domains 1
Blogs 1
Online courses 1
Affiliate programs 1

Against that, the capacity numbers are genuinely generous: 2,000 contacts, unlimited emails, 3 sales funnels with 15 steps total, and 0% transaction fees.

That is the shape of the whole plan. Lots of room to store and send; almost no room to automate.

What one campaign actually gets you

One campaign is not one email. A campaign is a sequence, so your single allowance can contain a multi-email series:

  • Email 1 (immediately): here is the lead magnet you asked for
  • Email 2 (day 2): the mistake most beginners make with this
  • Email 3 (day 4): a short case study
  • Email 4 (day 6): here is what I sell, if you want the fast version

All four of those live inside one campaign. For a beginner running a single lead magnet into a single offer, one campaign covers the entire funnel. That is a much better deal than “1” suggests at first glance.

Where the limit actually bites

You hit the wall when you need a second automated sequence running on different logic. In practice, that happens at these moments:

  • A second lead magnet. A different freebie needs its own delivery sequence — that is campaign number two.
  • Buyer vs non-buyer follow-up. Sending different emails to people who bought and people who did not requires separate sequences and more than one tag.
  • Re-engagement. A “you have not opened anything in 60 days” series is another campaign.
  • Launch sequences. A time-boxed launch running alongside your evergreen onboarding needs its own.

Notice that the single-tag limit compounds this. Even if campaigns were unlimited, one tag means you cannot reliably tell your segments apart — and segmentation is what makes a second sequence worth having.

The tag limit is the real constraint, not the campaign limit

Here is the thing worth understanding before you build anything.

A normal lead-magnet setup works like this: someone opts in → they get tagged → the tag triggers an automation that sends the sequence. That flow uses 1 tag, 1 automation rule and 1 campaign. Every one of your single allowances, spent on the first thing you build.

People plan around the 2,000-contact ceiling and get surprised by this instead. In most cases you will run into the automation limits long before you run into the contact limit — a list grows to 2,000 over many months, while you want a second sequence within weeks.

So when people ask “is the Systeme.io free plan enough?”, the honest answer is: it depends entirely on whether your plan needs one automated flow or several. Contacts are almost never the binding constraint.

How to get the most out of one campaign

If you want to stay free as long as possible, build deliberately:

  1. Spend your one campaign on your best sequence. Usually the lead-magnet-to-offer series — the one that turns subscribers into customers.
  2. Use broadcasts for everything else. Announcements, weekly emails, launches to your whole list. These are unlimited.
  3. Do not waste the tag on something trivial. Your single tag should mark the distinction that matters most — usually “downloaded the lead magnet” or “bought”.
  4. Run one lead magnet, not three. Beginners scatter across several freebies. One good one converts better anyway, and it fits the plan.
  5. Schedule broadcasts in advance. Scheduled newsletters still count as unlimited, so you can batch a month of emails without touching automation.

Built this way, the free plan can carry you to your first paying customers without spending anything.

When to upgrade

Upgrade when — and only when — one of these is true:

  • You genuinely need a second automated sequence
  • You need to separate buyers from non-buyers
  • You have outgrown 3 funnels or 15 funnel steps
  • You are approaching 2,000 contacts

The Startup plan is $17/month and lifts you to 5,000 contacts, unlimited sales funnels and 5 courses. If your one campaign is already producing sales, that is an easy decision. If it is not, more campaigns will not fix it — the sequence needs work, not the plan.

Frequently asked questions

How many emails can I send per month on the Systeme.io free plan?

Unlimited. There is no monthly send cap — the limit is 2,000 contacts. This is unusual; GetResponse’s free plan caps sends at 2,500 per month and MailerLite’s at 2,500.

Do newsletters count towards the 1 campaign limit?

No. Broadcasts and scheduled newsletters are unlimited and separate from campaigns.

Can one campaign contain multiple emails?

Yes. A campaign is a sequence, so your single campaign can hold a multi-email series sent over days or weeks.

What is the difference between a campaign, a workflow and an automation rule?

A rule is a simple trigger-and-action (“tag added → start campaign”). A workflow is a multi-step visual sequence. A campaign is the email series itself. The free plan gives you one of each — which is why a single lead-magnet setup uses most of your allowance.

Does the free plan expire?

No. It never expires and requires no credit card.

What happens if I need a second campaign?

You upgrade to Startup at $17/month. Nothing is deleted — the limit stops you creating new ones, it does not remove what exists.

The bottom line

One campaign, unlimited newsletters. If you are running a single lead magnet into a single offer and emailing your list regularly, the Systeme.io free plan does not restrict you in any way that matters — and 2,000 contacts with unlimited sends is more generous than most paid entry plans elsewhere.

If your plan needs several automated sequences and real segmentation, budget for the $17/month Startup plan from the start, or use a tool built for automation depth instead.

How I test, and why you can trust this

  • I pay for what I can. I bought the Hostinger Premium plan myself and this site runs on it. I use a real Systeme.io account, and the screenshots here come from it.
  • Every number is checked and dated. Prices and plan limits come from the official pricing page or help documentation, and I state the date I checked them. SaaS pricing changes — a dated figure is an honest one.
  • I do not invent experience. Where I have not used a tool myself, I say so and review it on verified features and pricing only.
  • I say when a competitor wins. If a tool I earn nothing from is the better choice for you, that is what the post says.
  • Affiliate links never change your price. They are marked, and they cost you nothing extra.
